Trying to figure out the best build for a melee Horizon Walker ranger with a potential multi-class into nature cleric down the line (or could be something else). The Horizon Walker is a close-range class, so melee is probably better damage-wise. Sword and board is the way to go IMO with dueling as it is the best mix of defense and offense. The Ranger has the same hit dice as a fighter, so that is not a problem. You do not need mobility as the distant strike ability does not provoke opportunity attacks ...

At higher levels, horizon walker is going to give you abilities that make make what echo knight gives you entirely mechanically redundant. I strongly encourage you to find a new ranger to go with your echo knight or to drop the echo knight entirely from your horizon walker. Similar to above, I would recommend a gloom stalker ranger.

Unless this is a lvl 20 build, I wouldn't go beyond 3-4 levels in fighter, since it's not much and you need a lot of time in horizon walker to actually get the cool teleporting/space magic stuff. For Horizon Walker, I'd not multi class before level 11 at the very least: With Tasha's, levels 1-10 for a Ranger are pretty dope, and Horizon Walker's level 11 ability is great. A DEX S&B build would work fine as well. Take the spells that either maximize your tactics -- HWs want mobility, really -- or your character.

I would say take the first 5 levels ranger. Then take either two levels of druid or three of rogue. Scout and assassin would work well for your concept. I would say wield a longsword and shield, or a greatsword/axe as the horizon walker is about one powerful attack. If you weren't being melee, you could take a longbow and focus on that.
